While swimming laps is a great way to get your heart rate up, there are many other moves to try that utilizes water as a source of resistance to up your exercise game. Aquatic moves can be a fun, new way to stay fit. The benefits of working out in water include: combining cardio with strength, increasing endurance and boosting flexibility. You will find that the buoyancy of being in water is easier on your joints and muscles and isn’t as high impact as weight resistance or jogging.

Just remember to not work out in too hot of water, make sure that you stay hydrated as working out in the water is still working out and causes loss of fluids.

Moves for you to try:

Take a walk: Did you know that you can walk in water? In the shallow side of your pool, take laps with your arms at your side, using a heel first stride and standing tall. Try to engage your core as you go. Walking is a great way to warm up and cool down and add an element of cardio.

Arm lifts: With or without foam dumbbells, you can tone up your arms with lifts. By being in water that is at your shoulders, you are using the water as a form of resistance without dumbbells. The movement includes moving your arms up to your shoulders and bringing them back down. Aim for up to 3 sets of 8 to 14 repetitions.

Glide for core: Start holding onto the ledge of your pool with knees tucked in. Press your feet into the wall and push off into a back float. Bring your knees into your chest, then back down to the pool bottom before running back to the pool wall and starting over. Time yourself and repeat this sequence for 5 to 10 minutes.

A classic in water: Jumping jacks in water are a fabulous way to work on your upper and lower body. You can add wrist and ankle weights to up your resistance. Classic jumping jacks should be completed for up to 3 sets and up to 14 repetitions per set.

All kinds of kicks: Leg kicks with or without ankle weights work the muscles of your legs and core. You can either hold on to the ledge of your pool or use a kickboard. Try flutter kicks, scissor kicks or the breaststroke kick.
